Candidate statement of Niels Ferguson for the 2003 IACR election

About Niels Ferguson

Many of you will know me from the 28 IACR conferences I've attended over the years, but let me introduce myself anyway. I'm a cryptographic engineer. Since 1990 I have worked on many things, but mostly on the design, implementation, and analyse of cryptographic primitives and systems. Many of the results are still confidential—a disadvantage of working in industry—but I've (co-)authored a fair number of publications. I'm probably best known for my work on electronic payment systems, privacy protection technologies, and our recent book Practical Cryptography.

About the IACR

The IACR has done an excellent job in organising the conferences and the community. I hope to be able to contribute to this tradition. Apart from the obvious challenges ahead, such as electronic publishing, the IACR has also grown to a size that is difficult to run with volunteers, but not large enough to employ full-time staff. This will require some careful management by the board. With my background and experience I believe I can provide a valuable contribution to this work.
