Censorship in action: Silenced by the DMCA

The facts

I have written a paper detailing security weaknesses in the HDCP content protection system. I have decided to censor myself and not publish this paper for fear of prosecution and/or liability under the US DMCA law. The DMCA violates my free speech rights.

Essay

I wrote an essay on this issue: Censorship in action: why I don't publish my HDCP results. Feel free to distribute this essay to individuals, including your elected representatives.

There is a Russian translation and a German translation available.

I have a FAQ with the most commonly asked questions in it.

In 2000, professor Felten and his research team were threatened with a DMCA lawsuit by the RIAA about a scientific paper they wrote. I filed a declaration in the resulting court case. Eventually the RIAA promised not to sue Felten and his team, and the lawsuit was dropped. Unfortunately, this does not solve my problem, as the RIAA didn't promise not to sue me.
